At the refuge, you will find an on site MNP information point where visitors, hikers, refuge guests, cyclers, motorbikers will get specific and targeted information… whether they are just passing through or have planned a longer stay in the vicinity of the Cayolle Pass.

From July 1st to August 31st, the information point is open everyday from 11 am to 5 pm. A friendly, efficient and highly qualified hostess is on hand to inform you about hiking routes, up-to-date trail and weather conditions, the fauna and flora of the Park.
You will get answers to all of your questions about the Mercantour National Park and its rules and regulations. Our friendly hostess will be of great help to you and so will the many brochures and leaflets available on site.

Beautiful books on the flora, fauna, and their habitats or on the French National Parks are available for sale on the spot, as well as IGN hiking maps or postcards. If you feel nostalgic about shopping, there is no need to despair: you will be able to leave with a souvenir T-shirt of the Mercantour National Park! Much to their delight, visitors will on occasions be given a chance to watch wildlife (marmots, chamois or golden eagles) through a telescope.

Now what if you need information outside normal opening hours? Do not worry and feel free to ask us directly at the Refuge!

The Mercantour National Park owns 3 refuges:

  • LE REFUGE DU COL DE LA CAYOLLE
    nestling in a high Alpine meadow just below the pass, 2326 m above sea-level.

  • LE REFUGE DE LA CANTONNIERE
    Located in Estenc, a small and charming hamlet standing 1800 m above sea-level, on the south facing side (Alpes Maritimes and Mediterranean coast) of La Cayolle pass.

  • LE REFUGE DE BAYASSE
    quietly set in the small secluded hamlet of Bayasse, at a height of 1850m, in the Bachelard valley, towards the town of Barcelonnette in the Alpes de Haute Provence.
